Mission Statement and Information Literacy Standards

MISSION STATEMENT:

The purpose of the high school library media program is to provide instructional leadership in the use of information resources to prepare students to stay informed in a rapidly changing world. The role of the library media specialist is to develop, administer and manage the library's programs and facilities, and to provide instruction in the use of information resources and technologies.

GUIDING IDEAS:

If we believe that the purpose of the school library media program is to provide instructional leadership in the use of information resources to prepare students to stay informed in a rapidly changing world, then we must
* Provide intellectual and physical access to materials in a variety of formats
* Provide instruction for all members of the high school learning community to foster competency and stimulate interest in accessing, understanding and authenticating information in order to become effective users of ideas and information
*Work collaboratively with other educators to design learning strategies that provide for differentiated learning and sharing of information
*Develop and provide instructional opportunities on information technologies with all members of the learning community at the high school
*Provide information and instruction on copyright laws, intellectual property and plagiarism

GOALS:

Recognizing that information from web resources favors lateral rather than linear thinking (Stripling, 2010), the library will seek to promote information literacy through the use of graphic and electronic textual formats, databases, audio and visual material in addition to conventional textual material.   To become college and career ready, the library will provide students with a broad range of content across genres, cultures and centuries.  Students will be encouraged to obtain multiple perspectives and present learning through a variety of formats.Elements of the Common Core will be incorporated into interdisciplinary lessons in the library to prepare students to be college and career ready.
