For the first time in history, Malverne High School has been featured on Newsweek’s list of the Best High Schools in America. The ranking, which pegs the district at No. 1,682, features only 2,000 high schools across the entire United States and approximately 200 from New York State. The high schools were ranked based upon those which best prepare their students for college, with the determining factors including graduation rate, participation in college-level courses and student acceptances to college.

Malverne Named One of the Best Communities for Music Education

The Malverne School District is thrilled to announce that for the first time ever, the district has been selected as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in America.

This designation was given to only 307 districts nationwide by the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation, which helped to put together a survey that was completed by thousands of districts across the country. The districts were measured across curricular and programmatic criteria, as well as through public support of their music programs, and only the top rated districts were chosen.

“Our presence on this national list is quite an honor, and is a result of the many years of hard work and dedication of the students and teachers, along with the tireless support of our Board of Education, administration and community,” District Director for Fine and Performing Arts Michael Messina said.

Mr. Brown began as the interim principal at the high school in February 2008 and was appointed principal in February 2009.

Mr. Brown began his career as a math teacher at Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School in the Roosevelt School District, where he quickly worked his way up to dean of students.
Students Dream Big for MLK

Students and their families gathered on the evening of January 18 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the theme of his famous speech “I Have a Dream…” Each of the schools honored Dr. King’s message of peace and equality through song, dance and skits, which also tied into the districtwide theme of “Dare to Dream.”

The evening’s program, hosted this year by Principal Ed Tallon of Davison Avenue Intermediate School, began with a presentation of colors by members of the Lakeview Girl Scouts and an invocation by Reverend Melvin Boone of St. Paul AME Church of Rockville Centre.

The tribute included lively performances of songs with inspirational messages from students at Downing and Davison, as well as skits proclaiming “change today” from HTH’s Harmony Chorus, and concluded with a modern dance piece set to the “I Have a Dream” speech by members of the high school’s Black Studies Group.

The 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award recipient honorees were Donald Hayes, a Malverne Volunteer in Public Schools (VIPS), and Kito Lockwood, coach and student support mentor at the high school. Both of the honorees are prime examples of Dr. King’s ideals of perseverance, dedication and compassion.

Eighth-grade students at Howard T. Herber Middle School recently held their annual Immigration Extravaganza. Students researched immigrants who have come to the U.S. since 1800, and then in small groups displayed their information on a board. The eighth-graders were required to do an in-depth study on the culture of the immigrants and their contributions to the United States. The culture of the immigrants was brought to life by using props, dressing the part and having food from the country of origin. Countries included Italy, Japan, Vietnam, the Czech Republic, El Salvador, South Korea, North Korea, China, Colombia, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Modified Calendar

On December 11 the Board of Education approved a modified School Calendar for 2013 in order to make-up the 6 school instructional days that were lost during Hurricane Sandy.

1. Three of the make-up days will be made up during the February vacation. February 19, 20 and 21 will become regular school days for all students and staff members.

2. The time required to make-up the equivalent of three additional days will be accomplished by extending the regular school day schedule. The starting and ending times for each school will be extended by 15 minutes each, for a total of 30 minutes per day. This extended schedule will begin on Monday, January 7, 2013 and end on Friday, March 8, 2013. A revised school schedule will be published by each school principal.

Hopefully, no more school days will need to be cancelled for the remainder of the year. However, should it be necessary to make up any “snow days”, it will require the loss of days from the Spring vacation period, starting with April 1 and March 25.

Marching Band is Still the “Pride” of Malverne

The Pride of Malverne High School Marching Band, former New York State champions, competed at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse the weekend before Hurricane Sandy and most recently placed second out of seven bands in the Small School 2 division. The second-place victory sealed an extensive history of success with the band, who for the past two years have placed first in their class.

“Our students perform at championships at such a high level year after year that the name ‘Malverne’ is associated with words such as pride, excellence and tradition,” assistant marching band director Glen Johnson said of the high school ensemble. “They exceeded expectations, did their absolute best and clearly had one of the best performances of the morning. I’m extremely proud of them and cannot wait until next year!”

Other band highlights from the 2012-13 season include:

• Placing first in their class at all regular season competitions – Brentwood, Copiague, Arlington, Walt Whitman and Mineola.

• Hosting their first-ever home competition this year on Sept. 30, 2012. Twelve bands, including Malverne, performed that day.

• Coming in second place out of seven bands in the Small School 2 class with a score of 83.10, only .25 points out of first place.

Exceptional Audit Results

The Malverne School District is proud to report that over the past three years, the district has substantially improved the operation and management of its business office according to the opinion of its external auditors, RS Abrams & Co. The Malverne School District has also established a positive financial position, enabling it to earn a AA3 Moody’s rating, which raises the district’s credit score and gives it a much more attractive interest rate for loans. In fact, when borrowing the money for the recent bond referendum, the interest rate was so much better than anticipated that it will result in a $1.67 million savings for taxpayers over the life of the bond.

The district has also achieved increased transparency in all of its financial documents, earning Malverne a “No Significant Deficiencies” classification during their annual audit. Only three minor recommendations were noted on this audit, a significant improvement by comparison with past audit reports. Based upon the audit, Malverne’s external auditors, R.S. Abrams, did not identify any deficiencies in internal control over final reporting considered to be material weakness.

At the Board of Education meeting on Oct. 9, 2012, R.S. Abrams publicly recognized the district’s improvement financial position. “The district is currently in a better financial position than many other districts on Long Island,” the representative stated. The auditor further commented upon the effectiveness of the business office, under the leadership of Thomas McDaid, Jr. Esq. during the last three years.

A copy of Malverne’s audit report can be found on the district’s website at www.malverne.k12.ny.us.
