Last October, over 1.6 million high school juniors took the PSAT exam, which serves as an initial screening for program entrants into the National Merit Scholarship competition.  This week, approximately 16,000 of these students  were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.  This nationwide pool of Semifinalists, represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, including the highest-scoring entrants in each state.  Malverne High School’s very own Roshni Shukla is one of those Semifinalists.

School Counselor Mrs. Nicole Beauford describes Roshni as, “A shining example of everything Malverne High School has to offer.  She has taken advantage of our challenging courses and incredible academic and extracurricular opportunities, clubs, and athletic teams.”  She has excelled in all of her Advanced Placement (AP) and College Level classes.  Roshni has been designated as an AP Scholar with Distinction, based on her performance on AP exams.  By the end of this year, she will be eligible to graduate with approximately 30 college credits.  Roshni also participated in the competitive BOCES Doshi STEM program in 9th and 10th grade, and is a member of the Model U.N. Club, and Varsity Girls Tennis Team.  As a flute player, Roshni is an active member of the Award-Winning Marching Band, and has somehow managed to find the time to be a member of the MHS Newspaper and Community Service Clubs.

Although undecided on her major, Roshni is excited about the next step in her academic career.  While still adding schools to her list, she plans to apply to Columbia, NYU, CUNY Macaulay Honors Program, Fordham University, and St. John’s University.

As a Semifinalist, Roshni has the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be awarded next spring.  Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.  Finalists will be notified of their standing in the spring of 2018.

Congratulations Roshni Shukla! Malverne High School is proud to have you as one of our shining stars.
