The Board of Education unanimously voted to approve the renaming of its football field to The Colbert J. Britt, Jr. Memorial Field at the July 11 meeting. The Board took the naming under consideration after receiving a petition from the community with more than 1,100 signatures.

A lifelong and respected member of the community, Mr. Britt cared deeply about the youth of Malverne/Lakeview. He was hired in 1972 as a physical education teacher at Howard T. Herber Middle School and remained there until his retirement on June 30, 2005. Mr. Britt coached many junior varsity and varsity teams during his time in the district and continued coaching for an additional ten years after his formal retirement. He served as a role model to students and was respected for his leadership abilities and determination in ensuring that all of his athletes succeeded both on and off the field.

Some of his most notable achievements include earning the 1990 Varsity Football Rutgers Cup Championship as well as training with 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Derrick Adkins. He was responsible for beginning the Friendship Games, an annual track and field event, and was a charter member of the Lakeview Youth Federation.

Coach Colbert J. Britt died on Dec. 27, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Norma Britt, and their daughter Alma.

The dedication ceremony of the football field will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14 as part of the district’s homecoming festivities. All MHS alumni and members of the entire community are invited, and encouraged, to attend this momentous occasion.
