At the July 26 meeting of the Malverne Union Free School District’s Board of Education, the Board appointed James H. Miller as Assistant Principal of Howard T. Herber Middle School, effective August 26, 2016. At that same meeting, Mr. Micheal Pelan, who previously held the position of teacher at HTH and coach, as Chairperson of Physical Education and Health and Athletic Director, effective July 27, 2016.  

James H. Miller comes to Malverne after 10 years in the classroom at Uniondale High School, where he taught living environment and physics. Besides his classroom duties, he took on a number of administrative roles, which included assisting in school building data analysis and the administration of Regents exams. Mr. Miller also served as the assistant principal of the Summer High School program. He will replace Daniel Nehlsen, who has been promoted to the position of Principal of HTH.

“With his successful classroom experience and strong leadership background, Mr. Miller is an excellent addition to the administrative team and the Howard T. Herber family,” said Mr. Nehlsen.  

Mr. Miller received his Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Pennsylvania State University, his Master’s Degree in Secondary Science Education from Adelphi University, and his Administrative Certificate from The College of Saint Rose. He currently resides in Lynbrook with his wife and three children.

A member of the Malverne School District faculty since August 2007, Micheal Pelan has been a physical education teacher at Howard T. Herber Middle School and a three-sport coach at Malverne High School. With his strong background and experience in Athletics and Physical Education, he plans to expand upon the current successes and achievements of these departments as he oversees them.
 
Excited about his transition from teacher to leader, Mr. Pelan said, “It is through athletics and physical education that our students learn the value of teamwork, perseverance and commitment. It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I accept this new leadership role in Malverne.”

Mr. Pelan received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Molloy College, his Master’s in Physical Education from Adelphi University, and his Administrative Certificate from The College of Saint Rose. He currently resides in Nesconset with his wife and daughter.
