At the May 17 meeting, the Malverne Board of Education appointed Howard T. Herber Assistant Principal Daniel F. Nehlsen to the position of principal at the school, effective Aug. 26, 2016. Mr. Nehlsen will replace Steven Gilhuley, who has been appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Education Services.

Mr. Nehlsen has rendered exceptional professional service to the Malverne School District since February 2003, first as a mathematics teacher at Malverne High School, and then as dean of students at the middle school for five years. He has continued to provide leadership as the assistant principal at the middle school for the past three years. In addition to his role as building leader, Mr. Nehlsen served as the district’s director of technology in 2014. Under this title, he helped move the district toward creating 21st-century classrooms through the deployment of a 1:1 iPad initiative, updated wireless networks, advancements in online instructional interventions, and by creating technological alignment across the district’s four schools.

With his strong background and experience in school management, instructional leadership and technology, Mr. Nehlsen will continue to improve the growth and development of Howard T. Herber’s quest for excellence in all aspects of student success.

Mr. Nehlsen received his Bachelor’s degree in computer science from Stony Brook University, his Master’s degree in mathematics education from LIU Post and his Administrative Certificate from the College of Saint Rose. He resides in Commack with his wife and three children.

When speaking of this newest leadership opportunity, Mr. Nehlsen said, “I am excited to take on this new role at Howard T. Herber. I look forward to working with the parents, faculty and staff in order to execute continued growth in the areas of curriculum, character, and college and career readiness.”
