He continues to serve as a mentor and coach to Malverne High School’s varsity boys basketball team and serves on numerous school district committees, including the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, Administrator Hiring Committees and the Schools of Opportunity Visitation Committee. A former secondary school principal for one of New York City’s most challenging schools, Mr. Lewis has been honored repeatedly for his altruism, with honors including the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, the NAACP Lakeview Chapter Service Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the Malverne Teachers’ Association.

Nominated for his exemplary leadership at Malverne High School, Dr. Romano has created a cultural transformation at the school. During his tenure, the school community has made a commitment to the highest academic achievement and pro-social behavior. Leading by example, Dr. Romano’s active involvement in the development of each student has fostered a climate of camaraderie and teamwork among staff and students alike. Success rates have never been higher, and the school has received national recognition for its efforts, including a School of Opportunity Gold Award, placement on the National College Board’s Advanced Placement Honor Roll, designation as an AP School of Excellence, and national ranking among the top 10 percent of high schools by the Washington Post and Newsweek for college readiness.

Distinguishing himself as a master social studies teacher at Malverne High School, Mr. China has a genuine passion for his subject matter. He believes in the potential of his students and holds each of them to the highest academic standards. Always willing to go above and beyond to ensure success, he boasts the highest enrollment and achievement scores in the Advanced Placement courses he teaches. Mr. China was chosen for this award based upon his high standards, outstanding results, personal integrity and unwavering commitment to students.
