Teacher Earns 2020 STANYS Fellow’s Award

Donna Banek, a science teacher at Howard T. Herber Middle School, has earned the 2020 Science Teachers Association of New York State Fellow’s Award. This annual award, which honors teachers who have served with distinction as science educators, is the highest honor bestowed upon a STANYS member.

 

Ms. Banek has taught science in the Malverne School District and been a member of STANYS for 33 years. In the district, she has served as lead teacher for the Saturday Academy, co-director of the Malverne Teachers Center and as a science and health coordinator. Through her commitment to STANYS, she has demonstrated her unending support to science education and science teachers through supportive ideas and continued advocacy. Ms. Banek served as association secretary from 2013-2019. Other recent accomplishments include the 2012 STANYS Excellence in Teaching Intermediate Level Teacher Award, the 2012 Molloy College Alumni Service Award and 2011 Nassau Section Service Award.

 

She will be honored at STANYS’ 2020 fall annual meeting, this year held virtually, and celebrated at the 2021 STANYS state conference.
